NIST publishes the AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0)

NIST has released a voluntary framework to help organisations manage the risks of artificial intelligence and build trustworthy AI.

NIST has published the Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0), a voluntary, sector-agnostic framework for managing risks to individuals, organisations and society associated with AI.

The core is organised around four functions:

  • Govern: cultivate a culture of AI risk management, with policies, accountability and oversight.
  • Map: establish the context of each AI system and identify its risks and impacts.
  • Measure: analyse, assess and track AI risks.
  • Manage: prioritise and act on risks, and monitor them over time.

The framework also describes the characteristics of trustworthy AI: valid and reliable; safe; secure and resilient; accountable and transparent; explainable and interpretable; privacy-enhanced; and fair, with harmful bias managed.

With AI adoption accelerating, the AI RMF gives organisations a practical starting point for governing their use of AI alongside their existing information security and privacy programmes.
