The revised EU electronic identification and trust services regulation, eIDAS 2 (Regulation (EU) 2024/1183), enters into force today.
Key changes
- Every Member State must offer citizens and businesses a European Digital Identity Wallet.
- New qualified trust services, including electronic ledgers, electronic archiving and electronic attestation of attributes.
- Strengthened security and certification requirements for wallets and trust service providers.
For UK organisations: the UK continues to operate its own retained version of eIDAS, and UK qualified trust services are not automatically recognised in the EU. If you rely on electronic signatures or seals in EU transactions, check that your trust service provider is recognised there.
